Water Saving, Weather-Based Controllers
Beyond ensuring that your irrigation system
has been designed and installed properly and regularly
maintained, the
next way to dramatically conserve water is through
the use of weather-based controllers, called ET or SMART
controllers.
ET stands for Evapo-Transpiration, which
is the amount of water evaporated from the surface of soil
and leaf surfaces,
and the water transpired (similar to perspired) through
the plants. All plants use water. This water used is
referred to as ET. Several factors affect how much water
is used,
like sunlight, temperature, humidity, wind and plant
species.
Some plants need more water than others.
The time of the year affects temperature, amount of sunlight
and the growth
rate of plants. And on windy, dry days, plants use more
water.
Based on this weather information, a trained
and experienced irrigation technician can program these
weather-based controllers
to nearly match the amount of water your landscape needs.
Fuhrman Landscaping, Inc. is a certified
contractor with Aqua
Conserve, one of the manufacturers
of these SMART
controllers. We have the experience of installing numerous
Aqua Conserve controllers in California, and are enthusiastic
to promote these controllers in Colorado.
Aqua Conserve controllers are self-contained,
simple to program and use, and are based on historical
weather and
ET data. The controllers are further designed to match
weather patterns with the use of a rain shut-off sensor
and a real-time temperature sensor.
These controllers are excellent for a homeowner
who does not want to manually perform seasonal changes.
They are
excellent for homeowners associations and commercial
properties with several controllers on site that become
cumbersome
to program. The controllers are ideal for anyone seriously
interested in saving water and money.
